The refrigerator gasket is the flexible seal stripping around the outside edge of freezer and refrigerator doors that provides an airtight seal. It attaches to the refrigerator or freezer frame or door and is squeezed between the frame and door to prevent the warm outside air from entering the cool interior.

Over time gaskets become worn, brittle and cracked, allowing air to enter the cool interior of the refrigerator and freezer, warming the food inside and creating a greater potential for spoilage. Faulty gaskets also make the compressor run overtime, wearing out the equipment early and increasing your electric bill.

Sometimes tears or loose strips of gasket material are obvious. Other times, units that keep turning themselves on or running nonstop indicate a problem. Often the problem is not so obvious.
